A Planting we will go......Much to everyone’s delight, and third time lucky, Sunday July 30th 2017 turned out fine and sunny. Rotarians from the Rotary Club of South Bunbury plus several children and grandchildren and friends of Rotarians turned up. Kirk and Emma’s children joined in and helped out. Over 700 plants consisting of trees, shrubs and hedges were planted out and plastic tree guards installed around each plant. Kirk had the plants ready to be picked up by each planting team and acted as a go to man (gopher) whenever there was a problem. Much of the site was very wet and muddy and one of the reasons for planting the site was to soak up some of this water. The kids ( and adults)loved the mud and most would have had to be hosed down after the event. A BBQ lunch put on by Kirk and Emma was very welcome plus some excellent cakes and other goodies brought by several Rotarians. Everyone present enjoyed the project Don Spriggins s |

NYSF 2013 - A Life Changing Experience Patrick Ryan Newton Moore Senior High![]() This is a report sent to our club by one of our recent National Youth Science Forum participants, Patrick Ryan.
In the school holidays, l attended the National Youth Science Forum in Perth. A prestigious twelve day program aimed at students entering their final year of schooling - essentially a 'taste tester' of what careers after University might entail. The program's goal was to help hone the decision of the selected students as to what they may want to study at University.
I chose to apply for the program as I knew I wasn't entirely sure of what I wanted to pursue as a career. I also found the prospect of living away from home for twelve days... enticing. I was lucky enough to be one of two selected from the South West.

CALLED TO HIGHER SERVICE … FAREWELL ROTARIAN COLIN MITCHELL (PHF)
One of our longest serving members of 42 years Colin Mitchell sadly passed away on Wednesday 25 July 2012. Colin was awarded his PHF on the 17 August 1995 recognising not only his service to the community through Rotary, but also his achievements in business, his contribution to local hockey and his decorated service to the SES. Colin commenced a watch making apprenticeship in 1953 and in 1967 opened Plaza Jewellers expanding to Victoria Street, The Forum, Harvey and Narrogin. In 1978 he started the Classique Jewellery Corporation. In 1984 Colin was awarded a Diamond Jewellery Certificate of Honour from De Beers. In 1985 Colin was admitted as a member of the Jewellers Association. Colin was very active in the State Emergency Service and was recognised by being awarded life membership. In 1989 he was awarded a National Australian Medal for service to the community and later awarded a Bar to the medal. In 1994 Colin was presented with the City of Bunbury Commendation Award for Service to the Community. Colin received a Service recognition (1959-93) for Citizens Military Forces, Independent Rifle Company and 11/28th Royal West Australian Regiment. Colin’s achievements in the sporting world are too numerous to record however in 1978 he was awarded Life Membership of Exies Hockey Club and his contribution to the administration of hockey throughout his 35 playing years was praised and appreciated by the Hockey community. Throughout Colin’s business career he was rewarded with loyal and dedicated staff. His high standard of workmanship and his integrity at all times held him in high esteem throughout the business world. Colin was a shining example of a Rotarian with high ethical standards taking Rotary into the community and business world. Rotarian Colin Mitchell (PHF) will be sadly missed, especially his welcoming manner, humour and interesting questions for our guest speakers at our weekly dinner meetings. President Dr Stephen Hinton and Rotarians of the Rotary Club of South Bunbury extend their deepest sympathy to Betty and family for their sad loss. REST IN PEACE MITCH |

PAPUA NEW GUINEA LOI LOI VILLAGE WATER PROJECT![]()
Even with the aid of Google Maps and Wikipedia, Loi Loi in Papua New Guinea is hard to find. Five hours by boat from the bustling Port of Kimbe on the north coast, Loi Loi is a tiny community. The 90 odd-locals exist largely on subsistence farming, growing vegetables and farming pigs. However the villagers of Loi Loi face a significant issue every year with no permanent water supply. Loi Loi’s water comes from a small spring which dries up, putting incredible strain on the close community. Lack of water for sanitation means skin infections and ulcers are commonplace, issues compounded by the isolation. Loi Loi’s plight came to the attention of South Bunbury Rotarian Terry Coote while bass fishing in remote West New Britain Province. |

Black Tie Ball 2012The Rotary Club of South Bunbury has been dedicated since 1967 to working and fundraising to support projects that change people's lives for the better. Our two major events for the year are the Children's Fair in February and the Black Tie Ball in August. The Children's Fair recently provided new playground equipment for the Bunbury Regional Hospital, and provided funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. Funds were also pledged for an autistic children's program. Funds from the 2011 Black Tie Ball went to the Bunbury based Waratah Kids and Teens project and the South Bunbury Men's Shed. Funds from this year's event will again go to worthy local Rotary projects like Sail into Life, and community groups such as Bunbury Surf Lifesaving Club. So set the date in your diary, Saturday 11 August, 2012 and be walking up the steps of the Quality Lord Forrest Hotel at 6.30pm for a night to remember. |

Ray, as humble as ever, in an interview talked about his wife Val and what Rotary meant to him - and the friendship and fellowship he enjoys so much.

Rotary’s strength lies in the more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas, and this is the time to make sure your community knows who we are and what we do. Here are some tips on how to do that:

STUFF THE BUS - Margaret River Fire AppealDONATIONS of food and clothing can be put onto two South West Coach Lines vehicles in Bunbury and Busselton this Saturday from 9am to 12 noon. The Coaches will be parked at Mitchell Park in Queen Street Busselton and in front of the Bunbury Visitor Centre near Centrepoint for three hours, before departing to drive to drop off the donations in Margaret River that day. The Coach will also stop at Darby Park Serviced Apartments in Margaret River to collect more goods before being dropped off at the Margaret River Cultural Centre. Veolia Transport WA General Manager Lisa Shreeve said that staff had been very concerned about the people who lost everything in the fires and wanted to do something to contribute. “Many of our customers live in this area - we have regulars that are friends and so we want to do as much as we can to help them in their time of need.” “If we fill one bus up, we will bring another one down and keep filling them up.” Goods should be non perishable and clothing can include blankets, towels, sheets etc, preferably new. Craig Garrett speaks on his journey with Tenderfeet![]() Within the harsh environment of the slums of Kibera in Kenya, Tenderfeet Education Center brings to orphaned and disadvantaged children the three things they need to prepare for a better life – food, education and hope! Tenderfeet is a grassroots organization administered by local woman, Mama Margaret Nyabuto, a courageous woman who has served children in the slums for 20 years. Margaret is convinced that long-term holistic projects that care for the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of the residents – especially the children – is the best hope for the slums. A child lucky enough to go to Tenderfeet will get the foundations of a good education, two meals a day, and enough love to give them courage and determination for their future. With your support and donations even more children in the slums can have hope for their future, and dignity in their lives. |
